Neighborhood Law Corps

Oakland's award-winning community law unit puts lawyers in the streets to tackle drug houses, prostitution, slumlords, blight and other problems affecting the quality of life in our community.

Working with residents, police, business and civic groups, the NLC has improved or shut down dozens of problem liquor stores, drug properties and other public nuisances, and NLC lawyers have sued slumlords to clean up substandard apartment units across Oakland. read more

Many Oakland families have lost their homes in the ongoing foreclosure crisis. The City Attorney formed the Oakland Fair Lending Coalition to lobby for new laws in Sacramento, to help homeowners who are facing foreclosure and to protect the rights of renters in foreclosed buildings. read more

Oakland has an overconcentration of liquor licenses. Some liquor stores and bars become magnets for drug sales, violence, public nuisances and other problems. Working with police and neighbors, the City Attorney's Office has closed or imposed stricter operating conditions on dozens of problem liquor outlets. read more

Don't Spray First & Ask Questions Later

In 2008 the Oakland City Attorney's Office organized a coalition of Bay Area cities to oppose the state's moth spraying plan. The state planned to drop massive amounts of untested chemicals on Oakland and other cities prior to conducting an environmental review. read more
