Plastic Bag Ban

Californians use 19 billion single-use plastic bags a year, and throw away an estimated 600 per second.

In July 2007, the Oakland City Council passed an ordinance banning plastic bags in certain retail stores and encouraging reusable bags made from canvas or other materials.

In April 2008, a judge sided with a challenge to the ordinance filed by an industry group.
