Executive
Assistant to the City Attorney

The Executive Assistant to the City Attorney provides responsible, complex
and highly confidential secretarial and administrative support to the
City Attorney. This position receives general direction from the City
Attorney. This position requires great use of discretion, initiative and
independent judgment. The Executive Assistant to the City Attorney must
be able to interpret policies and procedures on a city-wide basis, complete
special assignments of a complex nature which require research and follow-up
and supervise assigned clerical staff. This position may occasionally
respond to inquiries from the press. Responsibilities include ongoing
contact with City Councilmembers, government and agency officials, representatives
of community and business organizations and all levels of City staff.
This position requires the ability to work independently, set priorities,
meet critical deadlines and handle multiple priorities with constant interruptions.
This position may provide immediate, general or indirect supervision to
subordinate staff. The work environment is fast-paced and deadline driven.
This classification is not governed by the Civil Service Rules and is
exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act. While the position is anticipated
to offer long-term employment, the successful candidate will serve "at
will" and may be released at any time. Currently there is one vacancy.

LAW
CLERKS - SUMMER 2008

The Office of the Oakland City Attorney is accepting applications from
law students for full-time and part-time summer law clerk positions. We
also accept applications for clinical semesters and volunteer fall and
spring law clerks.
The City Attorney's Office has two divisions. The Advisory Division
handles writ petitions and provides advice to the City's agencies, departments,
the Mayor, City Administrator, City Council members, and City boards and
commissions. The Litigation Division defends the City in litigation filed
against the City and also represents the City in actions filed on behalf
of the City. Law clerks are assigned to either the litigation or advisory
division.
Litigation Division law clerks perform research and draft litigation
pleadings. The litigation matters include a large number of tort cases,
many of which involve civil rights claims and which are venued in federal
court. Other litigation matters include drug nuisance abatement / blight
matters, contract disputes, land use / planning issues, writs, injunctions,
declaratory relief actions and employee discipline matters.
Advisory Division law clerks research and draft memoranda, briefs, legislation
and legal opinions on issues and policies of the City. Research topics
include labor and employment, civil rights, personal injury, land use
/ planning, bankruptcy, tax, real estate, copyright, the Americans with
Disabilities Act, Public Records Act, constitutional law, municipal finance,
conflicts of interest, ethics, utility law, election law and other areas
of municipal law.
Summer law clerk positions are full-time (37.5 hours per week) or part-time,
subject to approval of the part-time schedule by the Office. Due to budget
constraints, these positions are available only on a work-study, volunteer
or academic credit basis. Fall and spring law clerk positions are part-time
and may be staffed on a volunteer or academic credit basis.
