Deadline: Friday, March 7, 2008 by 5:00 p.m. (Postmarks not accepted)

The Office of the Oakland City Attorney is accepting applications from law students for full-time and part-time summer law clerk positions. We also accept applications for clinical semesters and volunteer fall and spring law clerks.

The City Attorney's Office has two divisions. The Advisory Division handles writ petitions and provides advice to the City's agencies, departments, the Mayor, City Administrator, City Council members, and City boards and commissions. The Litigation Division defends the City in litigation filed against the City and also represents the City in actions filed on behalf of the City. Law clerks are assigned to either the litigation or advisory division.

Litigation Division law clerks perform research and draft litigation pleadings. The litigation matters include a large number of tort cases, many of which involve civil rights claims and which are venued in federal court. Other litigation matters include drug nuisance abatement / blight matters, contract disputes, land use / planning issues, writs, injunctions, declaratory relief actions and employee discipline matters.

Advisory Division law clerks research and draft memoranda, briefs, legislation and legal opinions on issues and policies of the City. Research topics include labor and employment, civil rights, personal injury, land use / planning, bankruptcy, tax, real estate, copyright, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Public Records Act, constitutional law, municipal finance, conflicts of interest, ethics, utility law, election law and other areas of municipal law.

Summer law clerk positions are full-time (37.5 hours per week) or part-time, subject to approval of the part-time schedule by the Office. Due to budget constraints, these positions are available only on a work-study, volunteer or academic credit basis. Fall and spring law clerk positions are part-time and may be staffed on a volunteer or academic credit basis.
