The Neighborhood Law Corps (NLC)is a unique, innovative
community lawyering program created by Oakland City Attorney John A. Russo.
Proactive, neighborhood-based and community-directed, the Neighborhood
Law Corps brings resourcesand remedies into Oakland's toughest neighborhoods
to address issues before they become embedded, long-term problems. While
the Neighborhood Law Corps represents the City of Oakland, it will work
in collaboration with residents, neighborhood and merchant groups, and
other public agencies to improve the quality of life in our community.
The Neighborhood Law Corps has four full-time attorneys
serving a two-year appointment in Oakland's neighborhoods. They focus
on three community issues: blight and housing code violations, toxic pollution,
and consumer education.

In the last two years, The Neighborhood Law Corps has been awarded a
national Award of
Excellence by the National League of Cities and the Grand
Prize Winner by the League of California Cities for the Helen Putnam Award
for Excellence. Of the 466 cities in California, 146 applied for the
Putnam honor. The NLC was one of nine to receive the award for their exceptional
work in improving the quality of life for residents and businesses in
challenged neighborhoods.
