NEW - SF Chronicle Editorial - Oakland Takes on Liquor Stores

Oakland Liquor Stores Pledge to Close Early

Neighborhood Law Corps

Oakland Congratulates and Thanks
Every Merchant Who Signed
the Oakland Partnership Pledge!

The State of California permits liquor outlets to sell alcohol until two o'clock in the morning, and most do. So what would you think if a liquor store near you voluntarily closed its doors at midnight?

On February 20, the Neighborhood Law Corps, the Yemeni American Grocers Association, and community leaders organized a historic event in Oakland: One hundred neighborhood grocers signed the following pledge. Present to accept the pledge were over 100 community members and leaders and several city officials including Mayor Jerry Brown.

We all believe that closing a liquor store between midnight and 2 AM, and eliminating sales of fortified wines and narcotics paraphernalia will result in significant reduction of crime and blight in its neighborhood.

Oakland Partnership Pledge

We, the undersigned merchants of Oakland, believe that the highest health and safety of a neighborhood results from the contributions of all its people and establishments, including schools, churches, residents, law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and businesses.

It is our intent to make a positive contribution to our neighborhoods through the responsible operation of our business.

We therefore pledge:

1. To close by midnight and open no earlier than 7am,
2. To eliminate the sales of drug paraphernalia,
3. To eliminate the sales of fortified alcohol beverages and,
4. To attend community meetings and to work with neighborhood leaders to create and maintain the healthiest, safest neighborhoods in which to live, work, and raise our families.

We strongly encourage more liquor outlets to sign the Pledge and work with their neighbors to make Oakland a better and safer home for all.

If you are a merchant or know of one that wants to participate, please call the City Attorney's office at 510-238-3601 or e-mail us at info@neighborhoodlawcorps.org. Stores that sign the Pledge receive a poster that says, "We signed the Pledge". If you see one of these in a neighborhood market, remember to congratulate the owners and support them with your business!
