The legal work of the City Attorney’s Office falls into two main areas:

The Advisory Division, overseen by Chief Assistant City Attorney Amber Macaulay, provides advice and counsel on a broad range of issues to other City of Oakland agencies.

The General and Complex Litigation Division and the Affirmative Litigation, Enforcement and Innovation Division, overseen by Chief Assistant City Attorney Maria Bee, manages affirmative litigation brought by the Oakland City Attorney against outside actors, and represents the city when lawsuits are brought against the City of Oakland.
