City Attorney statement on Edgerly verdict

OAKLAND, CA – After 40 minutes of deliberation, a jury ruled today that gender discrimination had nothing to do with the termination of former Oakland City Administrator Deborah Edgerly.

Edgerly was terminated by former Mayor Ron Dellums in July 2008. In a lawsuit filed in July 2009 (Case # RG09461220), Edgerly claimed, among other things, that she was fired as a result of gender discrimination. The judge dismissed Edgerly’s other claims before trial.

Press Statement from Oakland City Attorney Barbara J. Parker:

“I am committed to vigorously defending our City and our residents to ensure that taxpayer dollars are protected. The jury clearly found that the plaintiff’s gender discrimination claim had no merit. I am gratified by this excellent verdict and I hope we can now put this behind us and forge ahead on the other priorities and challenges facing Oakland.”
